Some of the noteworthy shows on air during Spring Semester '07:
The Global Café airs weekdays from 6 to 12 a.m. This is a show that casts ethnocentricity aside by featuring the arts from a world perspective, focusing on music, film, television and literature.
Tune in each weekday from noon until 5 p.m.
Punk rock, indie rock, metal, metalcore, hardcore, thrash, sludge, doom, grind, grindcore, experimental, noise, EBM, gothic, industrial; no genre will be ignored.
What is Musical Chairs? It's more than just a game you played when you were back in elementary school. It's a two-hour mix of music broadcast on Monday nights from 8:00 to 10:00 for your listening pleasure. Tune in, and you can hear your youthful, vibrant, albeit rambling DJ, The Vossman, spin the difference. Anything goes in terms of the genres, but this show is especially for fans of:
You can also visit him on Myspace.
Upon returning to school, I realized my love for this stuff could be channelled into my year-old radio show, Beautiful Beatz. After a time-slot and format change, the end result was The Show Formerly Known as Beautiful Beatz (the title being an homage to a post-punk hero of mine whose name I'll let you figure out). Anyway, for a healthy dose of 60s Garage Rock, Early Punk Rock and a bit of new wave or "alternative" music, tune in every Thursday evening from 8-10 on 88.7 WSYC FM and listen to me, Brian McDermott kick out the proverbial jams.
On Preserving Peel, Bill Morgal will spin a wide-ranging spectrum of music with an emphasis on tracks from England and across the sea, perhaps only best described as "chunnelcore." There will be obscure tracks, infinitesimal bands and a healthy dose of catchy songs. The music will be renegade and the broadcast will be genuine. There is no replacing John Peel, but there is most certainly a chance to pay respect to a wonderful man. The show currently airs during The Global Cafe on Thursday mornings from 10 a.m. to noon.
Lady Plays the Blues touches all eras and styles of the greatest blues music available. Everyone is here from BB to Muddy to Slim. Every Wednesday night from 10pm till midnight, your host Miss JD Blues guides you through your midweek blues with the greatest music genre put on compact disc. Listen on Wednesday nights for the Feature 5 right after 11pm. This brings you a specific artist, album or theme essential to great blues. If you can’t stay up that late catch Lady Plays the Blues Global Café edition, Tuesday mornings from 10am till noon. For the playlists of both the shows visit my MySpace site. For the best blues show found on college radio listen to Lady Plays the Blues.

Bands like Bad Religion, NOFX and Social Distortion grew out of this squalor, and the sound was fresh. Featuring harder and faster music and more intelligently-written lyrics than their punk forefathers, this new punk is simply better than what most regulars know as punk rock. As the material wealth of America and the world grew, but somehow we found it necessary to fight even more wars, similar frustrations grew in areas such as Chicago, Illinois. Suburban Chicagites founded a glorious band known as Slapstick. These were just kids, and as kids do, they broke up. But these kids went on to form over half a dozen bands, and they are all amazing. If this new style of punk rock is what makes you turn, tune in to my show. I call it as it see it. During my show, you won't hear any crap I don't think is 100% amazing. I hate the Ramones, and, accordingly, you'll never hear them on my show. You'll also never hear any of this new trend of AP Magazine pop-pussy-image white rich suburban kid music. It's not about diversity of sound. It's about what is best. So, I'll sum up this rambling tirade. My show has a very liberal slant. Sometimes, I'll play a lot of music. Sometimes, I'll do a lot of talking. You better like the Alkaline Trio and the Lawrence Arms, cause I play a crapload of them. I call it like it is. I have very little tact, and I'm not politically correct. I do contests sometimes. I'll take requests. I might not play them, but I'll take them. All right, I think you got the idea of my show. It's pretty friggin' awesome, so please tune in and enjoy it. It's on every Tuesday night, from 10 p.m. until 1 in the morning. Okay, I'm out. Peace.
Tune into Rockin' the Ship from 8 to 10 for a healthy, eclectic mix of rock and roll. Enjoy themed shows like our "Salute to Rock Chicks," "Vocals from the Locals" and "Grunge: Where art Thou?" Call in for requests or AIM requests at RocktheShip06.
Join DJ Rick Coon for a collection of music that combines power metal with 80's, 90's, and psychedelic rock (think Pink Floyd, Yes... etc.) Show highlights include Video Game of the Week, World of Warcraft Addicts, and What's on Wikipedia? Tune in every Saturday night, from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. |
