Musical Chairs

JetSet logo.

What is Musical Chairs? It's more than just a game you played when you were back in elementary school. It's a two-hour mix of music broadcast on Monday nights from 8:00 to 10:00 for your listening pleasure. Tune in, and you can hear your youthful, vibrant, albeit rambling DJ, The Vossman, spin the difference. Anything goes in terms of the genres, but this show is especially for fans of:

  • Rock you won't always find on the major labels
  • Classic rock, Funk and, soul from before he was even born
  • Old-school (1980s) and Independent hip-hop
  • Straight cold smooth jazz
  • Anything related to progressive rock whatsoever
    (yes, progheads will enjoy)
About 90 minutes into the show, you will get a peek at the albums coming out the very next day, and possibly hearing songs in advance if Vossman can get his hands on them. Granted, this is the chance to break from tradition and encompass a great chunk of music to produce a refresher from the usual, especially when you think it will be a long week ahead. So tune in to Musical Chairs Monday nights at 8:00 p.m. for new quality music. Drop him a message or request during his show on AIM at vossmancometh.

You can also visit him on Myspace.

The Show Formerly Known
As Beautiful Beatz

JetSet logo.

Over the 2006-2007 holiday break, I found myself listening to copious amounts of early punk music and its progenitors, namely The Modern Lovers, Roxy Music, David Bowie, Dead Kennedys, and Television.

Upon returning to school, I realized my love for this stuff could be channelled into my year-old radio show, Beautiful Beatz. After a time-slot and format change, the end result was The Show Formerly Known as Beautiful Beatz (the title being an homage to a post-punk hero of mine whose name I'll let you figure out).

Anyway, for a healthy dose of 60s Garage Rock, Early Punk Rock and a bit of new wave or "alternative" music, tune in every Thursday evening from 8-10 on 88.7 WSYC FM and listen to me, Brian McDermott kick out the proverbial jams.

Preserving Peel

JetSet logo.

Radio One disc jockey John Peel was a broadcast legend, spinning the widest collection of music that went against the grain. With a Peel broadcast, there were no agendas or even any set plans. Peel was simply a fan of music, perhaps the biggest that this planet has ever seen. Sharing his favorites with the world allowed for those graced with the pleasure of listening to discover incredible music that could be heard absolutely nowhere else.

On Preserving Peel, Bill Morgal will spin a wide-ranging spectrum of music with an emphasis on tracks from England and across the sea, perhaps only best described as "chunnelcore." There will be obscure tracks, infinitesimal bands and a healthy dose of catchy songs. The music will be renegade and the broadcast will be genuine. There is no replacing John Peel, but there is most certainly a chance to pay respect to a wonderful man.

The show currently airs during The Global Cafe on Thursday mornings
from 10 a.m. to noon.

The Guided Tour of Chicago

JetSet logo.

Okay, so you were born in the mid-eighties, and you're frustrated. Most of us are. But "punk rock" was over. The hipster trend of the late seventies and early eighties faded fast and the world forgot about punk rock. However, in a remote place of the globe known as Southern California, rural unrest was growing. Conservative American policies coupled with the drunken stupor of youth lead to the development of the new punk rock.

Bands like Bad Religion, NOFX and Social Distortion grew out of this squalor, and the sound was fresh. Featuring harder and faster music and more intelligently-written lyrics than their punk forefathers, this new punk is simply better than what most regulars know as punk rock. As the material wealth of America and the world grew, but somehow we found it necessary to fight even more wars, similar frustrations grew in areas such as Chicago, Illinois. Suburban Chicagites founded a glorious band known as Slapstick.

These were just kids, and as kids do, they broke up. But these kids went on to form over half a dozen bands, and they are all amazing. If this new style of punk rock is what makes you turn, tune in to my show.

I call it as it see it. During my show, you won't hear any crap I don't think is 100% amazing. I hate the Ramones, and, accordingly, you'll never hear them on my show. You'll also never hear any of this new trend of AP Magazine pop-pussy-image white rich suburban kid music. It's not about diversity of sound. It's about what is best. So, I'll sum up this rambling tirade.

My show has a very liberal slant. Sometimes, I'll play a lot of music. Sometimes, I'll do a lot of talking. You better like the Alkaline Trio and the Lawrence Arms, cause I play a crapload of them. I call it like it is. I have very little tact, and I'm not politically correct. I do contests sometimes. I'll take requests. I might not play them, but I'll take them.

All right, I think you got the idea of my show. It's pretty friggin' awesome, so please tune in and enjoy it. It's on every Tuesday night, from 10 p.m. until 1 in the morning. Okay, I'm out. Peace.
