DJ Bio

Hello, darling people folk. My name is Sara Heistand, "Henry" rather, new to this whole college experience and excited to finally be on the air-air as opposed to online broadcasting to a sinister existence. I'm still moving into my radio voice, so excuse the lack of knack here.

My music that makes my show not so much click as tick include (and are by no means limited to) They Might Be Giants, Dawn Landes, Andrew Bird, Firewater, The Decemberists, Bright Eyes, Old Crow Medicine Show, The Hold Steady, DeVotchka, Jason Webley, Flight of the Conchords, Tom Waits, Squirrel Nut Zippers, the Felice Brothers... And so on and so forth. This doubles as a "favorites" list, btw.

But here's the full story.

Namen: Sara "Henry" Heistand! (Visit us at www.saheistand.com!)
Age: Legal!
Musical Instrument: Accordion, naturally!
Musical Obsession: They Might Be Giants, naturally! (If you've associated with TMBG aficionados in the past then you are aware that there is no simple preference in reference to these guys.)
CURRENT OBSESSION: Andrew Bird's new album, Noble Beast.
Favorite Drink: Chai tea and Dr. Pepper and good ol' water.
Favorite Food: Chicken parmesan. I will do everything in my power to attain a piece. As well as cheesecake!
Impressive Musical Experience(s) I Have Had and Needed To Find An Outlet For: Received the strangest looks from John Linnell of TMBG for odd hand movements during "E Eats Everything".
Receiving a shaky-hug (where you shake the other's hand in a half-hug sort of way) from Marty Beller, TMBG's drummer after that same show (it was really the best show).
Receiving the peace sign from Ringo Starr at a show in Easton (I was the only one dancing in the aisles?).
Touched Peter Tork's hand of the Monkees when I was eleven!
Uh, Michael Leviton is my Facebook friend.
And. I interviewed. John Flansburgh. Of They Might Be Giants. I call this instance "self-actualization."
Favorite Song(s): "She's An Angel" - They Might Be Giants, "Tables and Chairs" - Andrew Bird, "Nineteen" - Tegan and Sara
Favorite Book Series: The Dark Tower by one Stephen King. (Alright, and Harry Potter, 'kay?)
Favorite Movie(s): Amelie, Party Monster, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Swing Kids, and Across the Universe.

It's Gigantic!
Sara Henry Sep 30, 2008

The one thing I promised I'd do if I were to venture into radio was to interview not just anybody, but one (if not both) of the fantastic duo They Might Be Giants. Here I am, two o'clock in the morning, Oats N' Honey granola crumbs down the front of my faux vintage Phantom of the Opera shirt, still in shock four days after the phone conversation I had with Mr. John Flansburgh, Mr. Guitarist of TMBG.

How did this glorious half-hour come to fruition? Let us give thanks to Mr. Trevor Stottlemyer (who just happens to look like Flansy - whadda whut?). Without Trevor's incredible knack for networking and awesome tenacity, I could only hope that the Johns would come find me. Thank youuu, sir!
I went to the show in Lancaster at the Chameleon Club later that evening. If I may so gush, the surreality of standing a story above one-of-two musicians I most wanted to interview is crushing. Not the bone-splicing sort, but the gotta-hug-m'self-now one. Dear friendsy Jim and I fought torrential downpours for this concert. We're diehards. This had to be one of the most interesting sets I've seen Them perform, and this had been my fifth time. There were conga lines to be had ("No One Knows My Plan"), creepy Kaoss pad magic, and the famous Stick ("The Stick! The Stick!" shouted the Audience uncontained glee) of early They Might Be Giants lore. They played the staples and they played the obscure. They Might Be Giants are always well-rounded. They even threw in two songs off John Linnell and John F's individual ventures. Honestly, I have never seen Linnell as energetic as when I saw him sing "West Virginia" of his State Songs project; a song for a select amount of states that, actually, have nothing to do about the states. I never listened intently to Flansburgh's Mono Puff side project, but I really thing I should as "Unsupervised" was, in a phrase, flippin' hot.
    Anywho.
Currently, I am working on editing the interview package, but I assure you that the John Flansburgh interview (in full!) will be aired soonly and you, too, shall reach self-actualization.

          -Henry
