Studio A (on-air) Phone Usage
These procedures are for using the phones in the on-air “A” Studio, and cover both using phones and giving out phone numbers over the air. Below are correct phone procedures for phone interviews and request lines.
- WSYC FM’s request line is 477-1480. This is the only number that is to be said over the air. ("extension 1480" and "717-477-1480" are OK.) Our other numbers, 477-1489, 532-6006, cell numbers etc. are prohibited. The only exception would be telephone numbers that are connected with event cards, donorships, university-sanctioned campus activites or stop set information (example: “for more information on the Jeffery Gaines performance in Harrisburg call 717-555-5555").
- The Hybrid is not to be used to place random calls on the air. Specific shows have been cleared to use the hybrid. These shows must adhere to the basic phone procedures. If we continue to place random callers on the air we will be in jeopardy of getting a FCC violation. Every DJ who places a caller or interview on the air is responsible for what that caller says. If that caller breaks FCC regulation, the DJ on duty will be held accountable.
- If you have specific permission to place listeners on the air you must have them call in on X1480 . After telling them the basic on air rules and telling them they will be placed on the air. You must decide if they will behave and follow the rules. They will then call you back on the X 1489. When placing people on the air be aware of style. If you click the ON-AIR button on the hybrid and the “pot” is hot it will make a horrid connecting noise. Try to answer the X1489 phone with the POT volume down. Click on the Hybrid on air button hang up the phone and bring the POT Volume UP. DO NOT blast the POT volume. When you are ready to hang up bring the volume down before disconnecting. Please stop in during my office hours if you would like me to show you how to get a hybrid call on the air and have it sound clean and smooth.
If your show will be utilizing the Hybrid for interviews you must talk with a member of the Programming council of WSYC FM (Michelle Littero, Rusty Roberts or Trevor Stottlemyer), in advance of the interview. Unless given specific OK to continually use hybrid you must make sure that each time you plan an interview permission is given in advance. This is to insure that the interviews will adhere to FCC regulation and make it possible for us to help individual DJ’s perform high quality interviews.
This matter is very important and your help and cooperation is imperative. If any un-authorized person is caught using the hybrid or placing callers on the air you will giving a written warning. We also have to enforce the "1480" rule. After three written warnings for station conduct or procedure violations you will be suspended from all radio station activities for 90 days.
